The Amazon Web Services has detailed its reason for acquiring Wickr as improving security, as more business forge ahead with remote working.
On Friday, 25 June 2021, the acquisition of secure communication platform, Wickr by Amazon Web Services (AWS) was confirmed. Amazon confirmed the purchase of the communication platform which is being used by the government and military service.
In the shared statement, Amazon confirmed the acquisition by writing, “We’re excited to share that AWS has acquired Wickr, an innovative company that has developed the industry’s most secure, end-to-end encrypted, communication technology. With Wickr, customers and partners benefit from advanced security features not available with traditional communications services – across messaging, voice and video calling, file sharing, and collaboration. This gives security conscious enterprises and government agencies the ability to implement important governance and security controls to help them meet their compliance requirements.”
Currently, Amazon has confirmed that the app will continue to be used as it has been, however, the impact of the acquisition has been discussed. Many are awaiting to be fully informed of the intention of Amazon’s acquisition. Meanwhile, Amazon has alluded to the acquisition being to better ensure the security of online communication, as the world moves towards remote working.
AWS Chief Information Security Officer, Stephen Schmidt was quoted stating, “The need for this type of secure communications is accelerating. With the move to hybrid work environments, due in part to the Covid-19 pandemic, enterprises and government agencies have a growing desire to protect their communications across many remote locations. Wickr’s secure communications solutions help enterprises and government organizations adapt to this change in their workforces and is a welcome addition to the growing set of collaboration and productivity services that AWS offers customers and partners.”
